Fashion Week's Jewelry Flashbacks

February 19, 2009

New York Fashion Week is well underway, and the world's top designers are treating their recession-weary audiences to smorgasbord of shiny fabrics, statement jewelry and 80s nostalgia.

While the party circuit and the celebrity presence are more subdued this year, the runways aren't afraid to shine bright. Metallics continue to make a glittering appearance, from gold biker jackets to Carolina Herrera's shimmery classics. And while basic black is always a ready-to-wear staple, purple shades continue their hold on the color wheel, with teal making an impressive showing.

Statement necklaces show no signs of stopping as the year's signature jewelry trend, from Donna Karan's day-to-night stylings to Reem Acra's red carpet-worthy looks. And chunky metallic cuffs and earrings continue to emerge as the next 'big thing'.

But perhaps the most exciting catwalk revelation is the return to 80s glamour. From Marc Jacobs to Betsy Johnson there seems to be a universal hunkering for Cyndi Lauper tutus, Madonna leather and lace and the 80s most essential fashion staple - leggings, leggings and more leggings.

The Duran Duran meets Dynasty collection from Jacobs has the most tongues wagging, as shiny fabrics, asymmetrical cuts, neon yellow jewelry and "I Am The Warrior" face paint made a show-stopping appearance. The only thing missing was the choreography to Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield video.

What we wouldn't give?
