classic. Fashion designers looking to accessorize their runway models with big,
attention-seeking jewelry will opt for fashion jewelry rather than fine jewelry
because it's much more cost-effective to create large, voluminous jewelry using
nonprecious materials such as brass, steel, fabric or strass, particularly if
next season's "It" look is something completely different.
But fashion jewelry can also refer to precious jewelry with a designer twist that makes it more fashionable than traditional types of jewelry such as engagement rings or diamond ear studs.
Fashion jewelry can take its inspiration from the runway, the street, or films. Take, for example, the Tin Cup necklace, a series of pearls or beads knotted at wide intervals on thin silk thread or wire. Named after the 1996 film in which lead actress Rene Russo wore a similar necklace, the Tin Cup necklace was a very popular piece of fashion jewelry during the late 1990s.
Today, fashion jewelry runs the gamut, from long, draping chandelier-style earrings to cuff bangles made from oxidized sterling silver and semiprecious gems. Generally more affordable than classic fine jewelry, fashion jewelry reflects the trends and ideas of the Zeitgeist.
